Standard Wording for Press Coverage

When reporting a matched prediction, Seismikon requests that the following neutral, factual formulation is used:

"A Seismikon prediction recorded at [timestamp] matched [event] within [distance], [magnitude difference], and [time difference]."

We ask that coverage avoids framing predictions as infallible, and that equal coverage is given to predictions that did not match an event (false positives and false negatives). All performance data is publicly available on our Track Record page.

What Seismikon Does

Seismikon is an earthquake nowcasting platform that produces prospective predictions up to 48 hours in advance. Each prediction specifies a geographic location, magnitude range, depth, and time window. Predictions are evaluated against a published set of tolerances so that performance is always independently verifiable.

We run a public demonstration using California - a region with one of the world's most complete real-time seismic catalogues - so that results can be watched and independently verified. The same methodology is applicable to any seismically active region worldwide.

Scientific Basis

The platform implements the peer-reviewed research of Dr. Anastasios N. Bikos (University of Patras, Greece), which applies natural-time analysis and LSTM neural networks to seismic data. Natural time counts seismic events rather than clock time, allowing the detection of patterns in the seismic cycle that precede significant earthquakes.

Transparency Commitment

Seismikon publishes all predictions before their evaluation window closes and makes performance data publicly available - including failures. We believe transparency about false positives and false negatives is a prerequisite for scientific and commercial credibility.

Ethical Commitment

Seismikon does not issue evacuation orders or safety directives. It is not an official government warning system. All predictions are provided for informational purposes and are explicitly labelled as probabilistic forecasts, not certainties. We apply particular care in how we communicate during and after seismic events with casualties.

Is Seismikon claiming to predict earthquakes with certainty?

No. Seismikon produces probabilistic forecasts with defined geographic, magnitude, depth, and time-window tolerances. Every prediction is evaluated after the fact against those tolerances, and all outcomes - including failures - are published.

Is this an official government warning system?

No. Seismikon is a private research and commercial platform. It does not issue evacuation orders, safety advisories, or any official warnings. All predictions are for informational and research purposes only. Always follow guidance from authorised seismic monitoring agencies.

Has the methodology been peer reviewed?

Yes. The core methodology is described in a peer-reviewed publication by Dr. Anastasios N. Bikos (University of Patras, Greece). The paper is available for download from this page and from the Research section of the website.

What does "matched" mean in the context of a prediction?

A prediction is considered matched when a real earthquake falls within the predefined tolerances for location (distance), magnitude (range), depth, and time window simultaneously. The exact tolerances are published on the Evaluation Protocol page. A prediction that is not matched is a false positive and is recorded as such.

Does Seismikon report matches following damaging earthquakes?

Seismikon maintains a policy of not using triumphant or celebratory language following seismic events with casualties or major damage. If a prediction is matched by such an event, any reporting will be factual and subdued, with appropriate acknowledgement of the human impact of the event.
